H.264 source · decodes in every browser

MP4 to GIF

The everyday conversion: phone clips, downloaded videos, screen recordings. Drop an MP4 below — it converts locally, right now, with no upload.

MP4 is the easy case

MP4 is a container, and almost every MP4 you will ever meet carries H.264 video inside. H.264 is the one codec every browser decodes in software, with no hardware requirements — which is exactly why this converter has no “processing” spinner on the input side: the moment you drop the file, frames are already available.

What does not carry over is the reasons MP4 looks good. MP4 stores millions of colors per frame and only encodes what changes between frames. A GIF caps out at 256 colors and stores far more per frame. Practical consequences:

MP4 traitWhat happens in the GIF
Millions of colorsQuantized to a 256-color global palette — gradients band slightly
Inter-frame compressionGone — GIF size scales with duration × fps × pixels
Audio trackDropped (GIF has no audio)
4K sharpnessResampled to your chosen width (240–800 px) — a 720p source is already enough

FAQ

Why is my GIF bigger than my MP4?

A GIF stores every frame as a full image with at most 256 colors, while MP4 stores only the changes between frames as true-color video. A 5-second 480px GIF can easily outweigh a 30-second 480p MP4. Trim tighter, drop to 12 fps, or step the width down to shrink it.

Which MP4 settings convert best to GIF?

H.264 MP4 in any resolution — every browser decodes it natively, so conversion starts instantly. There is no quality advantage in converting from a 4K source, because the GIF is at most 800px wide anyway; a stable 1080p or 720p source works just as well.

Does the audio in my MP4 carry over?

No — the GIF format has no audio track. If you need sound, keep the MP4 and share it as a video; X, Discord and Reddit all autoplay muted videos inline just like GIFs.
